Andata in onda negli Stati Uniti sulla CBS ed in Italia su Canale5 (col titolo "Un Detective in corsia"), la serie ha come protagonista il Dr. Mark Sloan (Dick Van Dyke), primario di Medicina Interna presso il Community General Hospital di Los Angeles.
Mark Sloan non si limita a fare il dottore, è anche consulente medico del Dipartimento di Polizia di Los Angeles ed aiuta spesso suo figlio Steve Sloan (Barry Van Dyke), Tenente della Squadra Omicidi, nel corso di numerose indagini. Valido aiuto per Mark e Steve sono il Dr. Jesse Travis (Charlie Schlatter) ed il Medico Legale Amanda Bentley (Victoria Rowell).

Hanno fatto parte del cast anche:
1 - 2 serie: Delores Hall (Delores Mitchell) e Scott Baio (Dr. Jack Stewart).

Mark Sloan is not only a doctor, he is also Medical Consultant for the LAPD and often helps his son Steve Sloan (Barry Van Dyke), Lieutenant in the Homicide Division, during many investigations. Good help for Mark and Steve are Dr. Jasse Travis (Charlie Schlatter) and the Medical Examiner Amanda Bentley (Victoria Rowell).
